Born in Peru, Rev. Carmona, upon
graduating from high school, enrolled in the Peruvian Army’s Officers School
from which he graduated as an Infantry Second Lieutenant. He fought the
guerrilla group “Shining Path,” but a few years later he resigned his
commission disillusioned with the impact of this conflict on the poor. In 1993,
Rev. Carmona came to Rhode Island where he sought, and was granted, political
asylum. He became a U.S. citizen in 2010.
Rev. Carmona graduated from the New
England Institute of Technology with an associate degree in Multimedia Design
and then pursued theological studies at Providence College, Boston University,
and, most recently, at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington D.C., from
which he expects to earn a doctorate next year. He understands his calling is
“to care for, teach, organize, coach, and encourage God’s people in their noble
work in the world.”
